The River Suck

Dunamon Bridge

The River suck seen from Donamon Bridge during a spring flood.

Donamon Bridge stands over the beautiful river suck and is situated very close to Donamon Castle in Roscommon, which was originally built in the 12th Century by the O'finnaghy clan who owned the land for miles around, it has been occupied ever since making it one of the oldest permenantly occupied buildings in Ireland. The castle is open to visitors and is well worth a visit.

The river Suck is an excellent place for fishing and bird watching.

Trout, Pike, Bream, Roach, Rudd, Tench and Perch all reportedly come out of this river as well as Salmon from time to time. Checking the river conditions is vital to fishing here though, when the river is high it is very hard getting close enough to fish it, this river also has a very swift flowing current.

The tree's bordering the River Suck at Donamon Bridge provide excellent cover for a host of wildlife and birds, purple and spotted orchids are common here. Kingfishers are often seen fishing busily and cuckoos are regular visitors in the spring.
