September 05

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

September has always been the month for good angling with the weed problems reducing and more water to flush out the system after the summer months. This year this has been slow to happen as it's been one of the driest summers for some years.

But still, we've had very good fishing throughout this period at a number of venues including "The River Inny" with good returns from Chris Martin, Peter Wood, Frank and myself.

Fishing on the river at the upper reaches above "Red Bridge" has been very good with great bags of fish, mainly Roach, Hybrids, Rudd and Perch not all large fish but never-the-less it's Fish. Also there's been some remarkable Pike landed 3 fish over the 20lbs. and several around the 15lbs.mark.

The Rudd have not shown up in numbers but what we have caught have been around the 2lbs size,

A lovely Spetember Rudd

the Roach have been of good quality with few fish topping the 1lb. size; Hybrids are still doing their thing in the latter part of the day running into the darkness just up from the entrance to the Lough. Chris has had some of his finest catches in the evenings whilst I found it to late in the day and chilly.

Frank and Peter has been on their travels to other venues around "Roosky" and "Strokestown" all which has been Lakes and Small Ponds, All from the results of the New Book from Bernie Murphy ( The Complete Guide to Coarse Fisheries in the Irish Midlands- Book 2 ) which to my mind and Mr Wood is a must for any angler who loves Small Lakes and Pond fishing. Not all, of this book is on small lakes there are a number of larger lakes dotted about all within a stones throw of one-an-other. Full Marks to Bernie and his side kick Paddy for the amount of information and location on the different Lakes and the directions how to get there, which is one of the most valuable assets of this book.

That's enough of advertising for now, back to the reporting.

Visiting one of these Lakes, Peter with good friend Ken and myself fished McHughs Lake a few miles outside of Strokestown, quite a big Lake with Platforms on the (windward) side, but not to bad if you pick the right breeze, the place was heaving with fish all day, nothing too big but what a day out. Peter and I returned to the Spot a few days after only to find it very hard to get a Bite!! Another pond was "Cunny Beg" 1 of 3 lakes within yards of each other hear we found a good 8/9ft. close in after a clean-up of weed and Pads. Good size Roach and Rudd in amongst the smallish fish and I managed to land a Super Tench of 5lbs. to the curses of Peter Wood.

Another outing brought us to Lough Lea, here are ponds (6/7) that make your eyes water a Pure Delight, for the person who needs lot of R/R and good fishing. Pond 2 - There are a good head of fish in this Pond which is part of many small ponds where there are 2 stands and bank fishing, after Raking and clipping we fished until we were Put Out by the Rain storms. Result were, Peter 2 Tench, Rudd Hybrids, Skimmer bream, Rudd and Roach, I managed Rudd and Roach on the small side so Peter was "Top Man"

Back nearer to home I made several trips out on the Lake for a spot of Piking and to see what Bird Life has turned up, Pike result was 2 small Jack and the Birds are scarce due to the Duck Shooting Season.

Canal results are sparse but there must be someone catching somewhere along its length.
