September 2003

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

17th/ 31st September.

Weather still very dry and almost no rain, which is becoming a little alarming for the rivers and ponds around the district as the levels should be 'on the up' at this time of the year.

There are a few anglers going for what they can squeeze from the conditions and they are managing to catch fish although they're on the small side.

Paul Foxe had anglers staying at their B/B last week, Jason Pemberton and Andy Ashcroft who were lucky in dropping in on Lough Nablahy around the north side of Strokestown and it produced good mixed bags of Roach, Hybrids, Perch and the odd Pike, fishing here is all on platforms fishing into very deep water (20/30ft.) using feeder tactics.

I myself have had a few outings with friends over from England, the River Inny is very slow at the moment for fish but up at the town of Ballymahon near the bridge we found plenty of fish obliging to maggots, even the odd Trout.

The canal is still producing Tench if you can find a spot weed free, as this time of the year it's very prolific, we got a few hours at The Round-about near Mullingar and took Roach, Rudd and a small Pike.

A mighty Fish - sort of !!!

Other venues are very poor at this time, We Need Rain badly.

Frank and Peter had trips to Ballykeeran only to find the fish were out! On saying that anglers fished over 3 days and produced good catches on the 3rd. day with 30 good Bream.

9th/16th September

Still good weather, No Rain to do any good in the river so far.

Things are as before with not too much going on locally apart from Peter Wood who has been having some good hours at “The Bridge” in Ballmahon, where the river has movement and still holding good Roach and the odd Trout.

Myself and Frank had a trip up stream above “Red Bridge” in my little spot below Malady’s, there were 5 or 6 anglers fishing Red Bridge but from there gestures not too much going on here.  We made the Spot and set up to find that there were fish to be had every cast, they were only on the small side but it was fish!

News from Tommy’s anglers, who were at “Church Lake” Gowna, for several days only to be very disappointed with the results.   Anglers G Slinn, B Heigh, M Eshelby, J Carter and M Kemshall from Sheffield,  shared 70lb of Bream and Hybrids in a disappointing week.

2 Local lads had a spot of Pike Fishing  up the river beyond us and had 3 nice Pike on the Spinners the best weighed in at 9lbs. all fish returned safely.

1st - 8th. September.

Weather in good form, at the moment. the odd rain shower just to keep the dust down.

Frank and Peter have been trying new venues over the last weeks with some success, the best coming from the Lower Suck with good steady catches of Roach/Rudd and Bream (small) but rewarding.

The five boys from Tommy’s have been having success on lakes up in Roscommon around the Strokestown area with catches of Tench, Hybrids, Roach and Bream.

Paul Foxe has 6 lads in the B/B for the week and they are quite happy with their angling, there are two parties of 3, Steve Manning’s party were at Patrick’s Lough where they found Roach / Rudd and perch enough to keep them busy.   Also John Ellis’s party from Sheffield were at a Lough near Strokestown with a collection of Hybrids / Roach and Skimmers weighing in at around the 20 lb. mark

The reports from Mullingar are fair with a good showing of Tench, Roach and Rudd on the canal venues although the waters are very clear at this time.

Little has come in from the Inny as there’s a shortage of water and anglers with one happy day for young Robert English fishing from the boat with father Mervyn and pal Paul Conaughton.  A good collection of Hybrids small Roach, Rudd and a good Bream fell to Roberts’s bait of Maggots/Worm, which weighed in at around the 6lb. mark

I was introduced to the author of a great book on angling around the Longford / Roscommon solely on the Lakes and Loughs throughout the county’s vast amount, this I found very rewarding in as much I never knew there were so many Lakes so near to us and only 45mins. / 1 hour away that hold good stocks of Bream, Tench, Pike (of good size) and the Roach / Rudd population is vast.

The author is a Bernie Murphy from Longford who over the years has studied and fished all these lakes and has produced this book and is in the throws of a further 4 books on local fisheries around the Midlands, on reading this first book I found it most enlightening to the waters he has covered and is a must for all anglers visiting the Midlands.

There will be a Link produced shortly on this web site for anglers who wish more info on obtaining a copy.

5th of September.

Well September is upon us already, not long to go before Christmas...

Reports should be coming in again frequently now with any luck,
as long as the fish are willing to swallow the bait !!!
