October 04

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

24th – 31st October

From the worst Storms for decades to Calm conditions all in one week.

The river continues to rise but things are still fishable throughout the lower sections (Tommy Foxe’s).

Tuesday and Wednesday you wouldn’t go outside the door, Winds of 70/80mph with 2ins. of rain, Thursday all change and Peter and Frank were on the river at swims 31/32 although the river was dirty they managed good fishing with a good selection of Roach and Hybrids.

Friday Peter just couldn’t keep away and was at it by 11am until 4pm, total 10 good Hybrid and 2 Bream along with the odd Roach.

Saturday we all found ourselves in the same spot that Peter always manages to land first and occupies, Peg 32 (he must be in training to get there first) armed with his Polaroid Camera more pictures emerge of Hybrids (which I think is the same Fish stuck to the lens), I seem to be in attendance just to supply the Tea and Frank to tell us the same old story of 'where’s all the Bream Gone'.

Sunday, I was ahead of Peter for a change and plonked into 32 peg, without any banter from him, to find the fish were in good humour, Peter was within a couple of yards and both of us were soon into good Hybrids, Roach, Bream and a couple of fine Trout. Not a big heavy catch but ideal for this time of the year, now that the Clocks are put back we have to pull out earlier this means that we have to start earlier (well Peter will).

11th to 23rd October

We now are getting our share of rain over the last couple of weeks with the odd dry day, as the river rises the fish are interested with further catches of Good Roach and Hybrids.

Frost, some early mornings, with Gale Force winds other days North/North East, together with Heavy Showers other days making fishing very difficult.

Still, Peter and Frank made the effort on the good days but where struggling most of the time with the odd fish. One of the days they ventured to the River Suck at Ballygar and Ballyforan, the latter not providing a bite but at Ballygar just below the bridge things were different with a good collection of small Roach Perch and Hybrids falling to Red Maggots on a small lead on a rising river.

Tuesday 19th a visit to the River Inny at Tom’s provided good sport on one of the best days we had in weeks, good Sunshine throughout the day with a mild Westerly wind. Franks fished peg 30 whilst Peter slumped into his 32 swim, with the water around their feet now it still produced good fishing.

Saturday 23rd it was my turn to turnout But!! We had 2inches of Rain last night and the river was very fishable but the amount of debris made it impossible after a couple of hours, along with Peter we gathered all together and headed for Tommy’s kitchen.

Tommy ventured out this evening with dear friend Walter Glynn for a spot of Duck Shooting as the conditions were perfect and not to be missed.

2nd - 10th October

The weather has been very kind for the last week or so, good showers with the odd windy day but still allowing us to fish the Inny.

With the river steadily rising and a good colour Frank, now back on the scene from parent-minding, together with Peter are totally committed to fishing the river now that there’s more water.

All last week fishing from peg 30 to 32 in the afternoon until dark produced excellent results, with good Roach catches along with 4 Bream (smallish) and Hybrids. The wind now in an Easterly direction hindered float fishing (Downstream) so the small lead tactics came to the rescue, worms and maggots seemed to be the best bait for the better fish, Friday 8th being the best day.

Peter and I managed good bags of Roach on Sunday 10th from “The Bog Hole 32/33” Whilst Frank was dipping downstream towards the entrance with a small lead in all the swims to see if there’ were fish elsewhere - he reported back after an hour or so that there were fish everywhere he tried.

A pretty Autumn Perch

This is good news for this time of the year, meanwhile Peter is having trouble with Pike, I Chuckled to myself (that’ll keep him busy) Frank settled into swim 30 and for the rest of the day never stopped catching a better class of Roach.

1st October

Another new month is here (where do they go) Strong winds and rising water is the order of the day and a river full of Leaves.

Still Peter and I battled the elements, thinking that the increase of water might bring forth more fish (Wrong!) in fact it was pretty grim. Only the odd fish came in but the Pike seemed to be active, firstly Peter landed a Jack Pike on light gear and I put up a Pike Rod baited with a Scullyfied Perch.

I didn’t have to wait long before a “Take” A beautiful fish around the 10lb mark creating mayhem due to the size of my landing net and the antics of Mr Scully, but all went well and we landed the fish and returned it safely back to the river after the usual photo.

Even more Pike were around with several takes after but I failed to make contact, I was happy with my Lot today and Peter came Second !!
