June 2010

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

4th-30th June

Chris and I decided to have a couple of hours somewhere quiet, so we did the Tour! and stumped for Branigan's Harbour because the breeze was favourable and it was a great evening.

Shortly after we settled in Bernie Murphy arrived with a cart load of anglers to fish a competition just below us and after the Chorus of who's going to do what and the throwing of numerous rakes they settled in to their match.

We had 6 Tench along with Roach and Perch, the Tench were all on the small side but a delight to see as it appears to be newly stocked fish.

The Boy's were all enjoying themselves on this "Royal Canal Classic" and treated it in good sport,

Pictures by Bernie Murphy, also the results in a report from Bernie himself:

'The Royal Canal Classic - Brian Bohan was the winner with just over 4lb of roach, perch and small tench. John Wilson was the runner up. The competition was held below Branningan's Harbour on Friday evening June the 4th from 6 to 10 pm. Eight anglers took part. It was a very hot and sunny evening not ideal for fishing on the canal. This was the second running of the Royal Canal Classic, which is sponsored by Bernie Murphy. Last years winner was Brian Egan.'

1st - 3th of June

Weather has been hot and sunny with only one mild downpour, wind is light and from the Southeast. The heat was so bad Mr Scully had all his hair chopped off, either that or the sheep shearer should have gone to specsavers.

Mister Scully

Chris and I managed a nice evening trip down on the Inny in the boat starting up at Mallady's and working down to the entrance as evening set in. We had a good smattering of Roach, Rudd, Perch and Hybrids, we did observe that the Rudd were spawning.

The river like everywhere else is in desperate need of more water, the Inny is a good two foot down on where it should be.

We did here tell of fish still being caught at Coreen Forde, but again water levels are extremely low and playing an important part in the lack of fish.

Our reserve fishing spot at the Canal has been destroyed by weed cutting machines which have turned the already low water levels into a muddy soup, so we have given up for a while with the fishing and gone back to the Wildlife side of things, the Kingfishers have left the Bog after their nest site was disturbed by turf cutting machines, they left the chicks to perish.

However everything else is flourishing, Dragonflies and Damselflies are so proflific they are impossible to count. The birds are all feeding their young and our resident Kestrels are out hunting most of the day. The Red Admiral caterpillars are all busy eating the nettles so it looks as though august should get an excellent hatch.
