June 04
(these reports are displayed as most recent first)
26th / 30th June.
Weather still on the good side, winds SW. breezy with good showers River conditions as before not too much flow but improving daily.
We are very short of anglers but those who are here are still finding it hard to locate fish. Fishing at Tommys section has improved slightly with Peter Wood and Frank taking the odd Hybrids of good weight mixed with small Roach and Perch.
Further a field the Canal is still fishing well although the water levels here are dropping and the bright conditions are not helping. Peter and Frank have been out and about looking for other venues around the shores of Lough Ree only to find shallow waters around Renaldo Bay and Portlick Bay but are still in the process of looking.
The River Suck is the venue for a Festival shortly, which I fear little results due to low water levels. The upper Inny White Bridge Red Bridge is in the same grip of despair with much the same results just the odd small fish.
This is the conclusion of a really poor June; lets hope July is much improved and that we may see more fish in our section, elsewhere sport has been diabolical.
23rd to 25th June
Great conditions throughout the river now with a better flow rate.
The 2 lads Steve Morgan and Ken Stokes from Ramsgate, Kent, had their last two days on the river, day 1 was not too productive but today Friday 25th had them well pleased fishing the Bog Hole (pegs 32 and 33) with a great catch of Hybrids, 120lbs was the total catch with 2 specimen Hybrids of 5lb each.
What a note to end up on after all
the hardship over the past weeks,
and anglers disgruntled on the lack of
fish.
More rain is forecast for the weekend, which will be welcome and should bring the fishing back up to scratch.
19th to 22nd June.
Weather on the change; Showers to start with, then Heavy Rain Tuesday and Wednesday bringing the river to life, Strong Northerly Winds.
Two English anglers, Steve Morgan and friend cracked the Lean spell Sunday with a good catch of Bream, Roach and Hybrids. Fishing the Bog Hole they encountered the fish mid-day for about 1 hour, results were 6 large Bream around the 4/5lbs mark with a good helping of Hybrids and Roach.
Further trips to the Canal were not too successful but upon returning to the river Wednesday evening after the heavy rains fishing pegs 22/23 they were delighted to enjoy a fish-a-chuck on good Hybrids and of course Perch.
The Rain has now brought the river to life with the flow getting stronger each day.
Peter Wood has come to Life also and has begun trips to the river after hearing of the catches from the 2 lads, Frank has given it a good thought but requires more Rain to drag him out.
Lets hope now that we get back to normal soon as possible.
13th / 18th June.
Weather as before, with No Rain Winds in the North West, Breezy.
The way things are at the moment its hard to put two words together without sounding like a Parrott. But thats the way things have been for the last 4 weeks No Rain, Low River, No Fish.
The only blessing has been the Canal and now thats become dodgy with all the Sun and clearing water making it harder for anglers. Visits to The Suck have been fruitless, The River Inny is the worst I can recall, North of here has the same reports coming in with no fish apart for the odd small ones.
This time last year there was great sport to be had throughout June with Bream at Maladys good catches from Tommys and good showing of Tench on the canal.
As for now I will keep going as one-day things may pick up!
7th - 12th June.
Real Summer time weather at this moment with little rain to speak of, this leaves things very dry and the river conditions very low, winds light variable.
The Three lads from the UK staying with Paul Foxe have had a mixed week with very little from the river but sme good results from several visits to the Canal, good catches of Tench with Rudd and Roach.
Peter Wood and myself also had great fishing at Abbeyshrule in the evening time with classical Tench fishing on 3 occasions with fish weighing in at 4lbs. taken on maggots. More anglers have arrived only to hear of the lack of fish in the river, so we advised them to take to the canal and maybe the flowing part of the Inny at Maladys as Peter has had a good few small Hybrids and Roach on the evening time.
This week ended with High Pressure and the wind had got up somewhat only to add to the misery.
A few heavy showers but not enough
to do any good.
Still at least something is enjoying the
conditions...

3rd - 6th June.
Weather still very good, little rain, winds light variable.
All much the same on the river at the moment with a slight improvement up at Maladys, plenty of small fish to be had early and evenings. A father and son enjoyed the sport with Pike, fishing from a boat Spinning and Dead Bait produced 18 Pike all small with one of 15lbs.
News from around the Canal is that there are still plenty of fish to be had, although it went quiet Thursday 3rd Peter and myself found Tench in a good mood once again over the weekend at The Two Bridges Mullingar.

Scully decided that just watching for fish was no longer a challenge and so has decided to opt for a more personal approach.

There has been great activity out on the Lake with parties from Tommy Foxes with people Fly Fishing and Pike Trolling, all very pleased with their efforts, Trout were scarce but the Pike were obliging with smallish Fish of 7-8lbs plentiful.
New anglers are in at Paul Foxes b/b and are trying various venues so more reports will follow soon.
1st - 2nd, June.
The weather is the best thing happening here at the moment, good sunshine, slightly overcast on the 2nd with the odd shower, light winds.
Still no improvement in the river activities, very Low and Slow.
Further a field on the Canal things are great with conditions perfect for this type of fishing if you like it! Abbeyshrule and Mullingar sections are fishing well for Tench, Roach and good Rudd.
120 lbs was the catch of the day at Ballykeran from The Point, all Hybrids with only 2 Roach, this venue is very deep and we found the best way to fish it is using Slider float tactics, Feeder fishing does work but because of the Drop-off it makes it more difficult to control your line. Other bags were taken around the 50lbs. by other anglers.
Peter and myself had a rare happening, we fished together for the fist time on the Canal at the 2 Bridges near Mullingar, this venue is about 4 miles west of the roundabout on the Athlone road where the old bridge and a new bridge crosses the Canal, down stream (West) along the towpath for about 100yds or more, anywhere here is good fishing (Dont forget the Rake).

(Raking should be used
to clear the weed from swims making the fishing easier and better
as the
fish will move into the swims to see what food has been stirred
up.)
We landed here at just before 7pm. Raked the swim to the amazement of a passer-by who thought we were Mad and added a couple of balls of ground bait and set up the rods. Within 10 minutes my first fish came to the net, a Tench of about 3lbs followed by Rudd and Roach.
Peter had to wait a little longer for his first. Peter was up taking a picture of my second Tench closely followed by a local Labrador Dog:

who on seeing the fish returned to the water decided to do several laps of my swim to the delight of Peter, this was not the finish - up came a Boat at 40mph only to notice me within 30yds. And the man slowing down in the middle of the swim..... But this improved the swim! 5 more fine Tench finished the session at 10pm.

Peter was into good fish some 100yds away and ended the evening with 8 great Tench, the best being around the 6 lbs mark.

All fish were taken on Worms and Sweet Corn I have since given Peter a Camera and a set of Scales to record his catch; I would hate to think that people thought it's all Fishermens Tales.
