June 2003

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

Week Ending; 29th June.

The weather has been very kind this week, warm, little rain.

With the lake and river dropping all the time has brought it’s problems with the fishing.

Not too much to report at the moment with only a scattering of anglers around the place, Tom’s has been quiet with little being caught, Malady’s much the same with the odd fish here and there. Frank and Peter were at The River Suck for an afternoon and had a pleasant few hours, Skimmers, Roach and Perch at The Greenhouses (Coreen Ford) with the river in great condition for Float fishing and the Feeder.

Tench were in plentiful supply on The Canal earlier in the week but since switched off as Frank and I found out this Sunday, at Mary Lynch’s outside Mullingar, plenty of Rudd/Roach all on the small side. With the wind rather strong and coming from the East had its toll on the Tench fishing for now.

Tommy has been busy with hire boats for the Trout fishing on the Lake it seems that there’s been good Fly fishing going on around the islands.

Not so good on the fishing at the moment but Great for Hay Making.

Week Ending; 22nd June.

Weather has been very good for fishing, river getting back to normal levels.

Not too much to report around our patch due to a shortage of anglers, the one’s that I’ve managed to find have had very few fish, the odd Hybrid and Perch.

The fishing upstream at Malady’s has still got good Bream and Hybrids to be had.

Peter Wood’s guests Ken and his wife on their annual pilgrimage to the Inny have had good catches, although it can be patchy at times. Frank did well on an evening session for a couple of hours, Bream and Hybrids for the taking.

The Canal around Mullingar is still producing catches of Tench, the cloudy days seem to be an advantage due to the clarity of the waters or very early mornings. There were anglers in at Tom’s all day only to leave without handing in their reports. Tom will be back from holiday 24th which may make a difference in who catches what, and in what I can report.

Tench have been reported at Doonis Lake, Just around the corner from us, will keep an eye on this lake.

17th June.

Sunny periods, warm with light winds SW.

River levels are going down slightly but in good condition.

Well it was the last day’s fishing from the boys from Sussex, Peter and Andy, their move further upstream proved to be a good move, Catches of 93lbs for Andy and 80lbs for Peter between the hours of 5am until 12noon.

There were 4 more anglers in very early so I presume they must have had fish but no reports.

Up in Malady’s there’s fish to be had - Peter Wood and Frank had a good catch in a few hours of Hybrids and Bream, Peter found the fish to be in a good mood on the Stick Float taking SweetCorn readily, whilst Frank stuck to the Maggots and did very well.

There’s a shortage of anglers at the moment, so it looks like the reports may slow down to a weekly update and of course our own reports will keep me occupied in between visiting anglers.

I must say there's been more anglers in June than ever, which is good for the reports.

16th June.

Overcast mostly today but very warm and humid. Light SW winds.

Peter had the better of his son Andy today with 54lbs of Hybrids and 2 Bream, Andy found it a struggle in his swim and produced only 27lbs so it’s off to a new swim (a dry one) further upstream tonight for the Pre-baiting session, we shall see what it provides for the 2 Sussex men.

The Athlone Lads were in slightly later due to a late session on “The Black Stuff” this proved to be fatal for their fishing today, with little fish they headed back to Athlone for “The Cure” (more Black Stuff)

Three new lads from Turnmanbarry were at the river this morning early ( must be keeping up with the Web site news) They all caught fish , no weights lets hope they return.

15th June.

Weather is still great with light winds SW.

River conditions are in good form and fining down slowly.

The 4 Lads from Mark Egan’s Athlone are on the up with some of their best fishing yet, Pre-baiting the evening before paid off with catches of 70lbs, 56lbs, 45lbs and 30lb.

Peter and son Andy from Sussex again had a top catch early this morning after again Pre-baiting Andy topped 80lbs and Peter with 50lbs. There is a lesson to be leaned here, Pre-baiting and an early start will and has produced good fishing on the Inny.

Further up the river beyond “Red Bridge” seems to be having a revival with fish back on the move, with catches from Frank and Peter, of Bream , Hybrids and the odd Roach (not a million but well worth the walk down at Malady’s at “The Old Water Pump”)

13th/14th June.

Very warm and sunny, Light winds.

The river conditions are great; slightly coloured and just a good pull on it.

Peter and son, Andy were up at the crack of dawn fishing in the prebaited spot around “The Second Bend”. Friday 13th proved to good luck with the fishing here, Peter had a good 50lbs and Andy had a slightly better catch 75lbs.

Four lads from Mark Egan's found the going tough this day with the odd fish earlier but slackened of around lunchtime.

Saturday 14th The 4 lads came better today with good results early and the fish dropped off again mid day and have returned this evening to have a further session.

Peter and son were on the bank at 5am this morning and didn’t stop catching fish until 1pm. Final results were Peter around 80lbs including a Bream of 6lbs 12ozs. Andy was up in the weight stakes with a great catch 100lbs + not so many Bream today but loads of Hybrids.

A really stunning fish
Peter holding a lovely bream.

12th June.

The weather has been very kind today, good sunny spells with a stiff breeze.

The 2 anglers I missed yesterday come from Basingstoke, Nobby Branton and Andy Nash, The 2 were enjoying great fishing with 2 good nets of around 70/80lbs and today they’ve bettered their catch with Nobby netting 16 large Bream within an hour this evening to go with his good collection of Hybrids and Roach.

Andy himself had a great bag of Bream with Hybrids and Roach, Barely able to lift his net must have at least 80lbs.+ whilst Nobby had assistance with his net with a final weight of in excess of 100lbs, not bad for a flooded river.

Other anglers Peter and Andy fished “The Gravel Bank” today and also did very well for their first full day with a supply of Bream /Hybrids and looking forward to an early start in the morning.

News from Mullingar is that the Tench are still to be had throughout the Canal with “The Round-about” still favourite, with a best catch recently of; 136lbs by 2 anglers from GB.

11th June.

We still have sunny spells but Thundery Downpours with the river rising all the time.

Three anglers at the river today, Stuart Whitmarsh, Tom Hughs and Eric Condliffe fished “The Second Bend” having a great time with Bream and Hybrids and a few Roach and still catching.

I left to talk with 2 new Boys just landed, but had to give it a go before a well earned sleep after the long journey.

Still they ended up with a 60lb Bag in a few hours….Stuart, Tom and Eric had a great catch of 181lbs.

Even better were 2 anglers further up at “The Top Entrance” (which I missed due too a Downpour) according to their report at Tommy’s on their way out and thanked him for a great days fishing. (No weights given).

Paul’s anglers had a poor day at Ballykeeran.

Eric Condliffe landing a nice bream

Stuart Whitmarsh with a nice fish.

10th June.

Great improvement today, with great sunny spells, the odd shower.

River still on the rise and running fast and dirty.

Barry Baker and Co were out yesterday despite the conditions still fishing away at “The Gravel Bank” and today with good results to their amazement in such river conditions (no weights)

The Transit Boys faired not too badly with 2 days at Ballykeeran (the inner lakes) With Bream and Hybrids, which made up most of their catch, were happy enough.

Gary and Co visited the Canal once again only to be disappointed with the result after yesterday. There were visiting anglers around too who fished “The Gravel Bank” and according to Tom had fish despite the conditions.

9th June.

The weather has gone Mad, It has not stopped raining all day, with wind to match.

With the river rising fast it would not be a day for “The Inny” or anywhere for that matter. Further results from the new boys Gary, Roy and Pete at The Gravel Bank showed that the fishing did not improve yesterday.

Gary and Co decided on a spot of Canal fishing, so off to Mary Lynch’s outside of Mullingar. Here they found the Tench in a good mood and made the most of it with some great fish.

7th/8th. June.

Weather much the same with the odd shower. Light breezes Sw.

Saturday there were more fish to be had at the lower Inny at the Gravel Bank the Baker Boy’s were very happy with their lot today - which turned out to be an improvement on the day before with weights of; 70lbs. 45lbs. and a 35lbs. which included Bream and hybrids.

A few lads were fishing at “White Bridge” in the faster water and were catching until a local dog lover decided to exercise the dog by throwing the preverbal Stick in the river on top of the swims, this of course put pay to the fishing.

Two boys from Mark Egan’s were at the “Top Entrance” (Sun) 1 had a good bag of Big Bream whilst his partner struggled for a bite just 20 yds away.

Three more lads from the mainland arrived at Paul Foxe’s for their fishing holiday, fishing the lower Gravel Bank today and not doing too well at first, (I think the Guinness and the sunshine took it’s toll) but on leaving one lad just landed a good Bream, this had an immediate effect on the hang over. More news to follow!!

6th June.

Much better day, good sunny spells and much warmer.

Brighter news from Tom’s on the deeper stretch behind the Gravel Bank. Barry Baker along with Rod and Sid did very well with a steady flow of fish, all 3 had very close to 50lbs Bream, Hybrids, and a helping of Roach including a beautiful Rudd/Bream Hybrid.

This is an improvement on the day before and proves one has to stick at it!!

4th/5th June.

Heavy Showers, Breezy, much cooler.

Anglers at Paul’s have had mixed catches, 3 were on the First Bend and had a supply of Hybrids with the odd Bream, seems that the fish have thinned out on the upper stretches of the river.

Peter fished Malady’s only to catch a few Roach and small Skimmers, at least there’s fish showing up here. Frank put in an early start over at The First Pond on the Cut, he found that the Hybrids are still there and putting up a good show, but no Tench yet.

News from Mullingar; The Tench are still providing good sport throughout the Canal especially at The Round-about with other pickings of Roach and Rudd.

Tommy’s 3 anglers fished the Top Entrance of the Gravel Bank and where delighted with their catch of Bream and Hybrids including a Large Trout all 3 weighed in around the 35lbs mark.

News from the Inny around Abbey Shroule ; not much happening at all on most venues.

3rd June.

Heavy Rain clearing this afternoon; Mild, Breezy.

Not Good News around our venue, seems like the fish have spawned and are heading back downstream to the lake.

Frank and I spent the afternoon on the Canal near Mullingar at the Double Bridge fishing in the Turning Bay, Frank was in tune with the Tench with 6 good specimens up to 5lbs.

I myself struggled with 1 small Tench, we found that the temperature dropped later and so did the fish.

Paul’s anglers have had a poor day on the river with little or nothing to report.

1st and 2nd of June.

Rain in the morning clearing evening Sat, Sunday warm, the odd shower.

It’s all still happening still upstream at White Bridge with good catches of Roach/Hybrids and the occasional Bream by the new anglers staying with Paul Foxe even a Large Trout of 6lbs 8ozs on 2.5 line, Weights of catches to follow.

The report from Big Den and the boys who were camping out in the entrance to the lake were as follows: Friday night, Bream to 4lbs Hybrids by the score until the eels moved in, a terrific 240 lbs catch, with an eel of nearly 6lbs.

Saturday session started at 7pm, with good Bream to 6lbs and good Hybrids, only to be interrupted by eels at dark, so into the sleeping bags until 4am. at it again until 10.30am.to record a weight of 160lbs.

Pictures will follow as soon as possible.

Sunday Frank and myself were again over in the “First Pond” No Tench only Hybrids but good sport all the same.
