July 08

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

5th - 31st July

As for July, it's been much of the same throughout the month, Dry spells, Hot spells, and lots a Windy spells with a good share of Rain.

With all this, there have been anglers around at various venues, 3 English anglers had a session in Tommy's at pegs 5/6 and produced a good bag of Bream (7) Hybrids and Roach with a good helping of Perch.

At Abbeyshrule on the Canal anglers have been quite happy with there lot with the odd Tench falling to Sweetcorn and Worms along with Roach and Rudd. Tench fishing on the Canal has not been too good this month as a lot tend too Spawn and go off feeding but there are fish now finding there way down to Ballymahon stretches now that all the work has been completed on the New Road Bridge and the Canal is now full of water.

Two lads from England were at the water to the left of the bridge and caught a good few fish (40 in all) Roach, Rudd and Perch best being 8 ins. Which I was quite amazed to see in a few hours of fishing what was in this new stretch. I found a spot East of this when out with the camera chasing wildlife; on a slightly older section of the Canal I noticed plenty of action on the surface throughout.

With a rod and a few Maggots the next day it was a fish a chuck but only small to be had but never the less it was fish on the Doorstep! Closer study at one spot found to contain Tench with a great showing of their Blowing Off all around the swim but there were no takers, this spot will have to be visited at a further date armed with a Rake and a choice of baits.

4th July 2008

Weather has been wet, windy and thundery, with plenty of rain !

We did have a lovely email from John Wilson who was over fishing for 3 weeks in June. He spent time on the Royal Canal and on his first day he bagged 14 Tench near Abbeyshrule, largest being 6.5lb.

His best fish of the trip was a mighty 8lb+ Tench also from a spot close to Abbeyshrule, he added a few other nice tench to his tally that day as well as some Roach and a very pleasent bonus of a Bream.
