July 2003

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

 Week Ending 26th July.

Weather has been thundery with heavy showers this week, which put a little flow on the river.

Very warm and humid, not my type of weather.

Frank and I visited the Canal at the 2 bridges Tuesday for an afternoon session only to find it's been used as a local dump with enough rubbish to fill an ashbin it looks like there has been a Rave Party going on, a sure way of having the venue closed down just for the sake of a few mindless people.

We did get to fish and had good sport on Tench with a great helping of small fish falling to Maggot. With the water on the clear side we could see the Tench pre-occupied in the ritual of spawning but we managed to net 11 fine specimens towards late evening.

Peter Wood, Ken and his good wife made several trips to the River Suck (The upper reaches) around Roscommon on a section of the river were there has been extensive work carried out on Platforms for the disabled and others also on 2 near-by lakes. The fishing was not on fire but a constant supply of smallish Skimmers, Roach and Rudd kept them busy, with a bonus bream for Peter (4lbs)

Yet another sour note; Ken and his good lady fished Ballinafid Lake north of Mullingar last week only to find on there return to the car that it was 1 of many cars to be broken into and all types of items were stolen at a great loss to all.

Another lesson to be learned, Hide all valuables out of sight and be vigilant.

I am glad to say that in our neck of the woods things are very safe at Tommy foxe's and surrounding venues.

Back to the Plot, the fishing on the Inny has been very quiet with anglers on the short side, still there are fish to be had at Malady's (The Pump) although on the small side.

Week ending 19th July.

Still the weather is holding, very warm, and cloudy with light breezes.

More anglers visited Tom’s this week to fine a good supply of Hybrids but only very early in the morning, no nets were used but they said they had very good sport over their 3 days.

Chris (the web-site creator) and myself fished once more up under “The Pump” from my boat across the river to find there were loads of fish willing to oblige, good size Hybrids, Bream to 3lbs. and 4 good Rudd around the 1lb. mark, which was interesting as we were short of good Rudd last year.

A nice bream caught by John

Peter and Frank have been up and down to the river Suck without success - just the odd small fish, and fished the Inny at the Pump and scored every time with good bags of Bream (up to 3lbs) Hybrids and a few good Rudd.

The Ballymahon angling competition was held on the Canal at Abbey Shrule with poor results due to the bright sunshine and Gin clear water, top weight 11lbs 8ozs.

Tommy Foxe entered for the Raft Race (not himself), but a team for Inny Bay, and duly the raft came in Third Place (what ever next?)

Week ending the 11th

Wonderful weather, hot and balmy, wind slow from the west

The fish are still biting well, Nigel, Jean, Chris and Sommer came over for a week so first stop was down to the canal at Mullingar, after a good start on the tench we were swamped with little perch for a while then back to the tench again landing a dozen good specimens in a swim that the boys had cleared previously.

The Inny is still showing some good fishing above the red bridge with bream and hybrids topping, A few hours happy fishing and we had amassed a good weight of hybrids with the occasional bream, John showed his skill by having a bream a chuck and then rounded it off by landing a large bream which decided to plaster slime over everything.

The River Suck also fished well with some lovely rudd and hybrids upto 2lbs.

Other anglers fishing the river Inny reported good bags of bream and hybrids during a night fishing trip over 3 days. The exact figures are still waiting to be received.

Week ending 6th July

The weather has been very good this week, the odd heavy shower that is good for the river, which is in fine shape.

Still a bit on the slow side all round our patch, the upper Inny at Malady's has produced good Hybrids on the odd day with 2 anglers doing very well, Peter had a good day down at the Pump but then 2 days without a bite.

Red bridge has seen anglers but this stretch has not been doing well at all, Tommy's very much the same with anglers trying to tempt the fish too, no luck. Frank and Peter returned to The Suck only to find here too the fishing was off, on trying The Shannon at Shannon Bridge there was 1 angler catching Skimmers and odd bits but no luck here.

A visitor from France stayed overnight in Paul's B/B and was mad to fish (which he has not done before) Tommy fixed him up with a Spinning rod and lure so off he went up the river in a boat. 4 Pike was his total, best one around 8/9lbs, and one delighted visitor.

The Canal around Mullingar is still producing Tench and small Roach/Rudd on Patrick Street Round-about and The 2 Bridges 3 miles West on the Athlone Road.
