January 09

(these reports are displayed with the most recent first)

24th - 25th January

After very heavy Rain and Sleet over the past few days all possible chances to get even close to any waters have been dashed, the River Suck is spread over acres, the Shannon is well over it's banks and the Inny is roaring through. The Canal maintains its own levels but there is little chance of fish movement in these very cold conditions.

So it was Cameras instead of rods on our trips out and about. Even the wildlife has taken a downturn with this weather but we managed to snap a range of birds and new spring (winter) lambs but these poor creatures wished they had stayed indoors for a while longer. Dublin area was a little short of wildlife but Galway had a much better collection, plenty of Brent Geese as well as one African Goose which has gone feral, waders and a the rarer Icelandic Gull was obliging along with huge flocks of Lapwings and Plovers. Abbeyshrule has a good head of Whooper Swans at present which are always good to see.

You often wonder what make some people tick when we came across two lads, one being dragged across the waves on a Surf Board by a Kite and the other on a Wind Surf Board and the temperature outside was 3 degrees, even a fella going for a Swim !!

Well another new year is upon us.

The fishing is steady enough with Roach being caught on the river suck and down on the Shannon at Shannon Harbor, but the temperatures have been so cold that only the bravest or maddest of anglers are out there fishing. Reports have come in from Lough Ramor around the harbor that some good mixed bags have been caught recently.

As for the River Inny things are on hold this time of the year, with the river running very high and the Dredging going on it's hard to gauge what state the fishing is lightly to be in. So far the machines are just below White Bridge very close to the bridge, I have since been informed that they plan to return on the south bank as far as the River Tang just above Malady's field, lets hope it's completed before the fish migrate upstream.

The good News is that nothing has happened below Red Bridge and as far as Tommy Foxe's. The canal around Abbyshrule towards the Airfeld and beyond is looking very clean and the fact that there are fewer Eastern Europeans devastating these stretches due to the Downturn of the economy, lets hope this continues and the venue picks up!!

Wildlife is well and thriving with a good selection of species around, Whooper Swans, Hen harriers, Buzzards, Red wings, Field Fares, Golden Plovers and good small flocks of Wax Wings around the East Coast and Dublin.

There are reported to be an increase in Cattle Egrets around the South Coast as far down as Cork and around the corner into Kerry, we have yet to capture any on the camera.

Now the onset of winter is upon us reports will be light due to the weather, but I will do my best to report all fish movements as well as the wildlife.

1st Jan 2009

Happy New Year to all
