January 2003

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

Wednesday 29th.

Weather turned very cold and windy - NW, Strong.

Sunny days and Cold night Frosts. Peter braved all these elements to try Tom Foxes, First, he fished The Straight then up at The Bog Hole but was unable to get any response That was enough for this day.

Sunday 26th.

Frank had a rest for this day as the wind was up NW. Fresh / Strong still mild.

Peter on the other hand decided to go down at the Pump Malady's to find the river running hard, but he fished for a couple of hour turning up 2 nice Trout on there up the shallows.

Saturday 25th.

Still very mild, Winds W / NW light good sunny spells.

Peter and Frank fished the straight at the Gravel Pit entrance both fished on the feeder, the only way at this time of the flood, with more rain in the last few days the rivers up slightly and dirty. 2 Small Bream and 1 small Hybrid was the tally for today, at least it's fish.

Monday 20th.

Weather was to be good in the morning as yesterday and changing later to wet & windy.

Down after the fish goes the 2 boys, same spot same method, Peter 2 "Bream" Frank none!! More bites today although they were very shy, but it's a start.

Sunday 19th.

Not a bad day for fishing, good temperature, winds light Sw.

Frank and Peter went to Toms and fished "The Bog Hole" for the first time, there was not too much of a pull on and the river was very clear of debris with the level just under the grass line. 12am. until 3pm. Was the duration of this session with the "First" Bream of the year which fell to Peter a mighty fish of about 6lbs.

Wednesday 15th.

Weather Mild, Wind, SW. fresh /moderate, river in it's flow mode with the help of heavy overnight rain.

Peter and Frank were very eager to get down on the river at Tommy's, away by dinnertime after the chores has been done… Fishing at the Top Entrance in the same spots for several hours produced "No" fish this time.

Friday 10th.

The Frost has gone for a couple of days now.

It has left us in much warmer climes and with Westerly / South Westerly good breezes with of course the Rain,….. so it's back to the river for Peter / Frank to find that it's fined down somewhat and cleaner, Fishing at the Top entrance for a few hours on the Feeder, Peter found himself confronted with small bites and twitches, then a proper bite! A fine Hybrid followed by several more…..This brought Frank out of his sleep and on Red Alert, he too started to catch, not to many but it's a start. The two of them were very excited on what turned out to be a good few hours on the river.

Tuesday 7th.

Frank and Peter visited the River Inny for a trial run at Tommy Foxe's although the frost was hanging around all day with fine sunny spells, wind was nothing to talk of and the river is running hard. After a few hours nothing was tempted so they came out of there to try another day.

Sunday 5th.

Peter & Frank were mad to go!

So off to Shannon Harbour, with the weather still very cold (frosty) Shannon Harbour is where the Grand Canal enters the river Brosna and then into the Shannon near Cloghan Co.Offaly. Fishing the last few yards of the canal as it meets the river was in good fishing order due to the height of the river it made a great backwater…. 14ft.here, wind in the rear, light breeze and the occasional sunny spell….. After a good few hours, they enjoyed the session with the bonus of the first fish of the year, some small Roach, Skimmers and Perch.

Friday 3rd.

As from the beginning of the month, it took a bit of effort to going after the festive season but Peter and Frank were at it, I myself was stuck to my bed awaiting the reports to come in. The river has been very high over the last few months due to adverse weather in November/December. What with the high river and lake and the cold spell in early January things are still pretty slow.
