August 09

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

1st - 30th August

Rain has been the order of this month, with the temperatures dropping and the nights starting to draw in.

Fishing has been slack to say the least, even the most dedicated of anglers have been hanging up the fishing rods and looking for something else to do. There are odd reports still coming in of fish from the River Suck, Dennis had some Tench from the Canal at Abbeyshrule - 4lb being the biggest, and Doonis lough has been showing good signs of Roach gathering in the shallows for the autumn:

As for the wildlife, all is still in full swing with the Reed Buntings and Linnets starting to mass up, the swallows and starlings are forming huge flocks in preparation for their migration. The smaller Dragonflies are starting to disappear with the larger Brown and Common Hawkers still depositing eggs. The Peacock butterflies, Red Admirals and Painted Ladies are still showing well.

Portumna Forest Park is well worth a visit at this time of year, the Red Squirrels are feeding happily and there are still good numbers of the Silver-Washed Fritillary and Brimstone Butterflies to be seen.
