August 08

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

11th - 31st August

It's turned out to be the wettest month of the year with the rivers and ponds very high but one good thing is they've had a good flush-out.

There have been a few anglers around with Chris and I, have managed a few trip to the Canal and the river Inny, Not too much going on though small catches of Roach, Hybrids and Perch. Dennis from UK was over and had reasonable catches at Lanesbough,(The Hot water Stretch) and the harbor wall opposite, anglers at the outlet of the Power Station enjoyed Tench, Hybrids and Roach.

Lough Doonis just down the road from here is producing good catches of Roach with a showing of Tench which is rare for this water but they are there. Ponds around Strokestown were at there best before the rains, which led to flooding and made them difficult to reach.

Reports that Bream were sighted off Inch-More Island (SW) corner by a Fly Fisherman and he hooked several good Rudd on the fly.

September is coming in fast with the days shortening and the trees having a tinge of Autumn soon it will be back to the depths of winter with the migration of all the Birds so it's Camera Time.

1st - 10th August

On a visit to Portumna Forrest for a wildlife watch we did some swim finding, on the Shannon.

The stretch at the amenity park near the Castle, through the gate and drive right to the end of this road way there are 10/12 swims all of which are very well assessable and have deep water. (Gate is open and shut daily 8am until 8pm) A local man had just finished his session here and was truly delighted with his result 115lbs. of Bream, Hybrids, Roach and Skimmers all caught on feeder method and it fished all the time he was there, we were minutes too late from getting pictures.

Next stop was Banagher on the Shannon, good fishing to be had Downstream from the bridge on the evening sessions. Up stream there's Bullock Island, great from a boat to this section but access from the road is via a rough track on the road to Shannon Harbor road, details from a great guy (Ray) in the tackle shop in the town just up from the Bridge.

On the Wild life scene; there's plenty of new fledgling falling about and thousands of Butterflies along with Red squirrels and young Deer in the forest, Chris was very lucky in capturing a great shot of a Grasshopper Warbler,

Red Squirrel Deer at Portumna

Peacock Butterfly Silver Washed Fritillary

Grasshopper Warbler Juvenile Swallow

Locally, the only new thing on the block is a family of Long Eared Owls which can be heard and have been seen by a few locals leaving the Pub (say nothing) all the Grass have been cut and the Hay made so there's talk of a great Autumn to come.
