August 05

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

August 1st to 21st

All the makings of a typical August; low water, little rain and high temperatures.

Although the conditions are against us in making the fishing good at this time of the year things have been not so bad with great catches of small to medium fish on the upper Inny above Red Bridge. Frank and Peter have been out and about to various venues and have had success namely "Doonis" the river at "Malady's" "Friar's Island" which is a good size pond, a new venue for them which is located at Ballykerran through the Caravan Park this holds a good stock of Roach, Rudd, Hybrids and a good head of Tench.

Myself and Chris have had an easier time fishing from the boat up in the faster moving water above Red Bridge, here we had good mixed bags of fish, Rudd have been showing themselves more often lately with quite some vigour falling to Casters and Bread Flake, not forgetting the attendance of some fine Pike.

Out on the Lough, in and around Inny Bay things are very weedy now and impossible to Troll in the shallower waters, still we have managed to land several small Jack Pike and some really good Perch. The overall picture is the same around all the places we fish, I did witness some great Roach fishing in Athlone below the Weir on the South bank just down from the Lock Gates with a angler pulling out good size Roach every cast and a joy to see him using Bread Bait.

With things on the slow side we have more time to look around at the wild life with the birds which have had several batches of young all very well fed on the insect life (which I think is stronger than ever) as the rest of the insects that the birds miss attack us from all quarters.

Swallow, Swifts and Martins are now beginning to bunch up for their long journey home and the Starlings make a great sight on the sunset with their gatherings seeking out a roosting site. Harriers, Hawks, Kingfishers, Fox Cubs, Badgers and Rabbits even the Mink play their part in the everyday picture of the wild life here.
