(these reports are displayed as most recent first)
30th August - 5th September
Weather all together perfect, good warm temperatures the odd shower and ideal conditions for fishing.
The fishing has gone back to very few at Tommy Foxes at the moment with only small bits and pieces the father and son had great Tench fishing in Lallys Field in the latter part of the holiday only sad thing was that there were no Pictures.
Frank was on the scene the next day to find only a little action so he moved up to Maladys and had a great session on small Roach and Hybrids for a few hours.
Peter had guests over in the shape of a nephew and friend for their annual trip. Fishing at The Two Bridges near Mullingar, they bagged good some Roach, Rudd and Tench that came to the net on the late evening, all were very pleased with that day. Further trips to Maladys where the two had reasonable catches of small fish on 2 occasions. Ballykeeran (Dog & Duck) also provided good sport for the nephew Alan Norrish, Peter had a struggle on to find fish and Alans friend managed some good Roach and small Hybrids. The best Roach weighed in at 1lb 8ozs with several around the 1 pound mark. I spoke to them after this session and they were on their way to The 2 Bridges for their last session this evening before heading back home tomorrow.
23rd - 29th August.
Weather has been just right for fishing with cooler temperatures and the odd showers adding more water in The Inny making it well worth the effort to try an hour or two.
Well things have improved drastically over the last week with the fishing coming back to normal at Tommy Foxes at last, thanks to the rain weve had.
Peter and Frank have had a field day since Wednesday finding the river to be full of Fish!! For every afternoon over the last 5 days theyve had terrific sport on the Float tactics in swims 21 and 22 with great catches of Roach, Hybrids (to 3lbs) several Bream (3 to 4lbs) and Rudd with Perch thrown in for good measure.
I found myself on the bank today (29thAug) at 3pm and fished until dark 8-30pm with Peter Wood in swim 32 The Bog Hole. It was most rewarding to find that there were so many Fish in the swim although the conditions were a lot windier today (Strong NW.) and the odd Squall thrown at us. It was Bites from the word go with great Hybrids around the 2/3lb mark and smallish Roach not too many Perch all fell to small Lead tactics, to allow for the roll, baited with 4 red Maggots on a 14 hook Im sure there were Bream to be had but for the amount of Hybrids and small Roach finding the bait first, one or two good fish were lost throughout this session.

Peter with a Hybrid and John with a Roach.
Both caught on the
29th of August.
Peter will be at it Monday as the wind is to drop off and allowing him to fish the Float, maybe he will contact more fish with this method. There has also been a father and son staying with Paul Foxe and his wife had an arrangement with him, the 2 men fish in the morning and all go Shopping in the afternoon (Not Bad eh!!) to add to this the two of them had great sport in swim 22 and 32 over the last few mornings.
15th to 22nd August
Weather very good really, overcast at times, good bright spots and the odd heavy shower.
The river has improved over the last few days with a better flow rate at the upper reaches (Shrule Bridge to Red Bridge) this has a greater baring on the fishing.
Peter and Frank had a great spell at Maladys Wednesday afternoon/evening with a fish a chuck on maggots fishing the Float at about 4ft. Good Roach, Hybrids and Skimmers, nothing too big but great sport all the same.
A Father and son staying with Paul Foxe over the last few days to do a spot of Pike fishing had good results overall with 2 Pike on day 1 and 8 Pike day 2 with weights around 7/8lbs all their fishing was from a Boat hired from Tommy out on the Lough and above Red Bridge on the river.
English anglers staying at Mark Egans Shannonside House, Athlone, have had good results fishing at Maladys and a spell at Drum Lake, Martin and Sam Smith had 2 great days fishing on the Inny with a good collection of fish, Roach to 1lb, Hybrids and Perch with the odd Big Pike crashing through the swim, results in excess of 50lbs Over at Drum Lake for a session, came back with results of fish being caught and a visit from Peter Wood, Wow!!!
Anglers reported to be massed, at Lanesborough Power Station where Bream were reported around the Bridge. So I ventured to this venue at top speed only to find that the place was empty of anglers and Fish, on enquiring in the local tackle shop as to where all these anglers and fish were the good lady told me things had been very poor for weeks and most of the fishing has been on the North side of the bridge with little results.
Weed has taken over great parts of the River and Canal at this time so one has to pick their spot carefully and use the Rake, with the on-come of Autumn and the increase of water this should be short lived, as I looked out at the weather today (Sunday) it's Pouring down and Blowing a Gale so its back to watching the Olympic Games on the Tele.
1st to the 14th August.
Over the last fortnight the weather has been very Hot and Sticky, with the river being in Bad condition through lack of rain and to end these 2 weeks we had Thundery Showers which have at last put a sight improvement in the river.
Well, the 3 of us have tried almost every possible venue around here from the small ponds to the River and the Lake trying to locate fish but it has been an uphill struggle. Peter is the only one of us who has caught any fish to speak of with early visits down the field to Maladys on the river, here he always catches a good bag of smallish Roach, Hybrids and Skimmers.
Frank has been persisting with Lallys Field only to watch Tench swim around his bait and rolling on the surface, he has tried everything in his book from baits to tackle but has only connected once with fish whilst Peter only manage eels.
Myself, I did catch a collection of small fish from the Boat up above Red Bridge which was quite pleasant for a few hours, on finding a clear section amongst all the weed (which has grown out of proportion this year) you get good results on the Maggots / Caster but failed to find the big Rudd up to now.
With good heavy showers over the last 2 days and more to come there is a hope for better things ahead.
There was the annual Trout Match last weekend out in the Lough with a good turn out of boats and anglers but the results werent to outstanding with the best fish coming in at just over 5lbs.
Mark Handsley with a catch of
Hybrids.
