August 2003
(these reports are displayed as most recent first)
10th August/ 31st August.
As for the weather, its been record breaking here and in the UK.
I must apologise for the lack of reports as I myself have been to the UK, for a Fishing Holiday down on the South Coast at Portland with a good friend of mine Brian Lincoln on his New Boat Irish Time but thats another story!!
Back to whats going on around here, very little from what info Ive received so far, plenty of small fish, with the water levels at their worst for years and the Canals are crystal clear with little or no fish reported at this time.
Tommy has anglers in at the moment from Yorkshire who are checking out different venues and have had a few fish in all with a better day at the Shannon Bridge venue.
September has always been a good month for fishing so its back to the fresh water gear and Ill be back!.
9th August
Sam was at it again today (his last day on the river) in much the same spot had a total of 40 fine fish and an excellent Perch of 2lbs. I can see Sam now telling all his friends how he conquered the Inny!
Terry and John from Leeds were having poor enough sport so I took them up the river, in the spot just below The Pump in the boat, the were catching Hybrids, Roach and good Perch within seconds of casting. I fished this spot last evening for a few hours and had brilliant fishing; good Roach and large Rudd turn up to make it just right!! No reports from Terry/John yet there still at it!! 7pm. for this is there last day.
Report came in at last that Terry and John managed 130lb of fish - not bad at all
7th August
It was a great day for a young angler from Yorkshire, Sam Holmes (aged 11) along with his father and mother took a boat out from Tommies and headed up the river above Red Bridge near to Maladys.
Here they found plenty of sport to keep young Sam busy, with Roach, Perch, Hybrids and the odd small Bream that accounted for the fine 30lbs of fish for Sam.
Week, ending. 6th August.
Weather has gone stone mad; Scorched Earth is what were up to now. No rain for quite a while and the river has slowed down to a crawl.
Anglers have visited Toms only to find small Roach and Perch, 4 lads staying in Athlone wanted to fish the upper reaches where Tom told them its the most likely spot to find fish (this is below Maladys /The Pump)
An S-O-S was out for me to show them the spots via. a boat, so off we went fully loaded with the gear to Maladys. After finding them each a spot on Ryans side of the river I left them to fish away.
Reports came back that evening that they had a great days fishing with Hybrids, Roach and Perch.
The same lads fished the Canal at Mullingar for a spot of Tench fishing ,here too they had great fishing with large Tench and bits also a touch of Sun-Burn.
Frank and myself decided to venture across to Roscommon around the Creggs District, which is centred around the River Suck catchments, here you have a host of lakes, namely Blacks Lake, Stonehams Lake, Holygrove Lake and Lough Loung, together with a terrific section of The River Suck at Dunamans Bridge.
Here the facilities are fantastic for the Disabled angler with staging every few yards and good access into all lakes apart for Holygrove where wheelchair access would be hard enough to reach the platform. Dunamans Bridge on The Suck is the pride and joy of the local district with almost 1000mts of stages fishing into deep water with all the species of fish that you would hope to catch.
So Frank and myself found all these popular venues only to find each one had its Bank Holiday events taking place i.e. Swimathons, Junior angling matches even a Dog swimming event. We found that Holy Grove was overlooked and we settled down to some great fishing although the fish were small, up until dusk.
A later visit from Frank and Peter produced good sport at Blacks Lake and further visits are on the cards when the weather cools down. Mean while back on the Inny, Frank has been out of a evening for the last hours before dark and has had great catches below at The Pump more people from Pauls b&b a couple and child, had good sport from the boat up at Maladys with the youngster really mad to go again.
Reports from Mullingar Canal sections are fair with catches of Tench still to be had, but alas this weather at the moment is far from ideal for canal fishing.
Week ending 2nd August
Still very warm with the odd heavy showers, river is in great condition with a good flow.
The dog and myself set off on Wednesday afternoon just to see what was happening on the river after some good heavy showers, with a small amount of groundbait and a handful of maggots I headed for Maladys (The Pump).
At the second bend there were 2 anglers quite happy sitting there with their nets in the water and a smile on their faces, good fishing was their response on asking hows the sport so onward up to the spot where I anchored across the flow set a few balls of groundbait and tackled up.
Within seconds the first fish came in A good Hybrid Roach and of coarse Perch, this went on for the duration of my stay A fish a chuck was indeed what was happening. Ran out of maggots went on to the Corn still there were great hybrids coming in, so its all go at Maladys at the moment.
Going back down the 2 boys were still there so I landed below them and walked back for a chat, John and Ken from Derbyshire was still fishing away and catching Hybrids Roach and Perch, here we have 2 happy anglers, baiting up for an early start was the order of the day for tomorrow.
Ken and John were on the river early this Thursday and found the fish in a taking mood with Good Bream, Hybrids, Roach and the Perch, this only lasted until around mid-day when the fishing came to Perch only (this is the time to catch up on the zzzzzzzs).
The 2 boys were challenged by the fishery board bailiffs, for a fishing permit for the River Inny which came into force earlier this year, and I must say where were they in the spring and up to now; So the boys had a trip to Mullingar to purchase same. 3 other anglers from England also had to follow suit.
After this setback all 5 were at ease to fish away, with good catches of Roach Hybrids and Perch all 5 were very pleased with the rest of the days sport.
On the subject of permits (which is not to many peoples liking locally) from what I hear from visiting anglers little or nothing is advertised in the UK and they end up with more expense unbeknown to them. Let the Fishery Top Dogs get up of their arses and do the right thing and tell visiting anglers what they should know before setting out to come over here. There are magazines by the score for them to advertise and inform anglers.
All fishing on the Lake The Cut The Ponds The Canals are free fishing (for Now) But the River Inny and The River Suck all Lakes around Mullingar You need a Permit.
