April 2010

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

19th April

Weather was bright again today and we had a brief evening trip down to the Inny to see what was occuring.

Bites were plentiful but hard to connect with, but we still had a nice bag for a couple of hours sport, with Roach, Perch, Hybrids and one or two smallish new Bream.

A Nice bag

As dusk finally made us retire there were lots of good fish moving their way up the river.

Many thanks to John Chambers who kindly passed us the results of the first Kingspan National Pike Championships Qualifier on the River Inny at Legan:

"The river was about a foot higher than normal and was faster. That said the water was clear and most of us expected reasonable catches. In the event the pike werent taking and the 92 anglers only managed to catch and return 42 pike. There were 2 other factors at play today, bright sunshine and spawning pike.

We had thought that spawning would have been over but most anglers saw pike spawning some at their feet !!!! Entries were taken in Sloweys Oasis Bar and we returned there to calculate the results. John and Philomena kindly laid on a huge number of sandwiches and gave us a bottles of whiskey and wine for the raffle.

The top 5 who qualified to fish in the Final were
1st Pat Dumphy (Durrow) 2 pike 19-09
2nd Frank Leonard (Ardee) 4 pike 11-15
3rd Pat Gorman (Tullamore) 2 pike 11-12
4th Marty Lawlor (Belfast) 2 pike 11-04
5th Gary Quinn (Drogheda) 2 pike 9-03
Pat Dunphy caught the best pike at 15-06 and took first prize in the pool a nice €230.

We were delighted to welcome 4 members of Fishmaniak who took part today."

With the weather continuing to be very good and the river returning to its normal levels things are looking very promising for a good run of Fish.

Chris had a very good session on Tuesday with some fine Roach and the odd small Bream and a good sprinkling of Hybrids. Thursday got better and Chris fished with his father and had a very good session with a good bag of fish, even the wild-life came out to play with a Mink determined to get in the action.

Tony Byrne from Dublin had some very good Perch today up to 11ins. and good Trout to 1lb. We have found that the Roach are in shoals and you have to be on the spot when they come through, which is typical at the beginning of the season lets hope things stay that way.

There were a trio of English anglers at Tommy's who had some good Fishing for a few hours with a catch of around 40lbs plus, of good Roach and Hybrids.

Not too much news coming from other venues, as there are not too many anglers at the moment.

AT LAST, THE FISH ARE ON THE MOVE.

After last weekends down pours which put on a flood that brought the level very high in the Inny, now there fining down. Sunday the 10th saw fish moving up from the lake heading for the higher reaches, plenty of Female Roach along with Hybrids and the odd Bream following in their wake.

Monday the 12th fish were very active around Ballymahon Bridge and below at Malady's at the pump where good size Roach were taken on the float, also on the small lead. It would be worth an hour or so to catch these early Roach if your in the right spot at the right time.

Chris had his cousin Philip over from England and tried a few days of fishing down at the Bog Hole with some lovely Trout, Roach and Perch being caught on the lead with maggots.

The Wildlife has gone into overdrive with Kingfishers feeding on the tadpoles and Diving beetles, the first of this years swallows have arrived along with the Warblers, the local bog is now inundated with Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler, but no sign of the Cuckoo yet.

Our local area was entertained by the fine weather and a lovely Hot Air Balloon that passed over Tang today: probably looking for the Roach...
