April 09

(these reports are displayed as most recent first)

24th - 30th April.

Weather rather mixed from what we had recently with some heavy showers which lifted the level up on the river and gave plenty of colour…. With more anglers arriving over the weekend, one party being the Tiverton Boys, over for 2 weeks.

They started at Malady's on Saturday (the 4 of them) and had a very reasonable start with good Roach around the 2 lbs, mark (photos will follow).

Fishing at White Bridge is very patchy with small catches.

There are the boys from Dublin who are determined to catch here and they are fishing most days I pass by.

Not too much news from elsewhere, the Canal is fishing slowly with small Tench (2lbs) odd Roach and Perch, I had noticed the water temperature is very cold and there's not too much surface movement at the moment.

To my surprise and delight I heard my first Cookoo this evening 30th April over in the Bog in Abbyshrule. Several anglers have tried Malady's over the last 2 days but they don't seem to want to talk about the session? Anglers fishing the entrance of the Inny at Tommy's are getting good results on the Bream and Hybrids, fishing evenings up to mid-night.

21st April

Another bright day with very light winds from the west, temperature got colder as the sun set though.

Chris and myself set off for the canal again, and we had hardly finished setting up before the float shot off sideways and I had the first Tench of the session, it was quickly followed by a string of good Perch, Rudd and Roach which we both enjoyed, Chris had the second Tench not long after and we had fish for the rest of the time until the sun had completely set.

The last 2 days ( or rather evenings ) were spent on the Canal at Abbyshrule, where Chris and myself enjoyed some excellent Roach fishing of a good quality on day one and returned to a new spot on day two to find that the Tench were in good form.

Three Tench in three casts topped with some good Rudd, and further Tench bites which eluded the hook, created brain damage; besides it was getting dark.

18th April

Good news and bad news today the weather was stunning but the brightness put the fish off until late evening.

The local Mink population were making the most of the day, one popped out of the water right in the front of Chris, it ran along the bank before disappearing up the Temple River but we did manage to get it to pose for this this photo:

The Roach only really put in an appearance as the last rays of the sun sank in to the westerly skies. The Roach that did come to the net were large females laden with roe, ready for a good night up at Shrule Bridge. We only used a net to show a quick sample for the camera. Frank was further downstream from Chris catching away steadily. The only other action was when Chris answered the call of nature and came back to find a pike had stripped one hunderd yards of line from his reel along with his new float...

15th / 16th April

Several trips down Malady's in between April showers and a keen Easterly winds.

The first of the female Roach have started to make their way upstream tonight. Small roach early on then an hour or so of nice little Trout moved through, this kept Chris and I content until about 7pm when the fishing finally took off, the large female Roach came upstream splashing their way though, Roach up to 2lb were taken with a fish a chuck on the float and the lead, best of all was no interference from the Pike. The fish were still feeding well at 9pm when the lack of light forced us to abandon the session.

With large female Roach making an early appearance we can only hope it continues for many weeks to come!!!

13th / 14th April

Showery; but very manageable, and rather mild.

Chris gave it a go down at the river in Malady's on Monday evening to find that the start of this session was slow but within an hour things went Crazy with a bite a chuck, of coarse this gave great interest to the Pike (smallish) that tormented all fish that was brought to the net. A pike of 5lbs. fell to Chris's net but he was kept very busy with nice sized Roach some of which were Males.

Tuesday evening we had a visitor from Lanesboughangling.ie, Paul who had a great time for a few hours with 40+ Roach, on the stick mainly 3-4ozs biggest of 12oz.

100lbs of Bream was reported from swim 32 (The Bog Hole) on Saturday (with pictures) which I didn't see... and on Sunday only 1 fish showed up, all moved on up stream!!

12 April

Breaking News ....

Despite cold and adverse conditions I and Chris decided to give the River Inny a quick go early on, before heading to the Canal at Abbeyshrule. Chris had a Trout on the first cast down on the river and several bites followed in quick succession but our main aim was the Canal so we headed off to give it a go.

Starting off with several nice Roach and Perch we soon added a bit of flavoured Groundbait to the swim hoping it would attract some early Tench.... AND IT DID !!!

Chris was particulary smug when he caught his first Tench of the year,
and I came in second with a hard scrapping Young Buck. Two Tench this early has to bode well for the rest of the year.

With the weather improving the birds are arriving and building like crazy, hopefully a good Summer will be had by all.

Starling A Spring Arrival

11th April

Weather has been very kind over this Easter Weekend, Good sunny spells with the odd shower.

I called in to Tommy Foxe's today for a report on anglers, 2 parties were at the River and 2 lads yesterday at the Gravel pit where they found the fish obliging towards the evening with a couple of Bream, Also At swim 32 (the Bog Hole) fish here were also in a good mood with Roach, Perch and Hybrids besides a couple of good Bream (worm/maggot).

Frank has just returned up from Malady's 7pm with smiles all over his face. Mostly Roach this afternoon with a couple of Perch, but all in all a great few hours fishing.

10th April

The Inny produced a good catch today at Maladys. Frank produced a nice catch of Roach and Hybrids, with one good Bream that ripped the hook at the last minute, at least this is good and positive news. The weather helped with a good bout of sunshine and warm temperatures. The fish fell to maggot/worm nailed to the bottom with a pig.

1st - 9th April

Typical April weather so far this year with good sunny days mixed with showers. The temperature has stayed reasonable between 12 and 15 degrees. Winds from the South-west.

Fishing has started slowly, no fish were produced over St Patricks Weekend but since then a few Pike have been taken from the Inny, one of 17lbs and one of 11lbs falling to two lads from Ballymahon. The Boghole and Gravel Pit have both started producing a few fish, Roach and Hybrids mainly. We will have to hope more anglers arrive to keep us informed.

With the weather improving and the days lengthening we decided it was time for a birding trip down to Wexford.

Below in Order we have Gannet, Oyster Catcher, Shag, Great Nothern Loon,
Red Throated Loon and a rarity to behold, the Ring Ouzel
